Description

Drop by the Ruby at noon on Friday for a casual art talk and free lunch! Speakers include Duke faculty and students who have produced work during a Rubenstein Arts Center arts project residency, as well as visiting artists and local NC creatives. Learn about the behind-the-scenes aspect of the creative process, careers in the arts, and more.

Ge Wang entered Duke in 1996 as a musician, fell in love with computer science while he was here, and has been working the rich intersection of the two areas ever since. As a graduate student, Wang created a programming language for music and put it to work in the Princeton Laptop Orchestra, which he co-directed. After joining the faculty of Stanford’s Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics and creating a laptop orchestra there, Wang developed music apps for iPhone as a principal of the Silicon Valley start-up Smule.

His latest endeavor, Artful Design: Technology in Search of the Sublime, is “a manifesto of how we shape technology, and a meditation on how technology shapes us in turn.” It is a meticulous exploration of the nature, meaning, and purpose of design in the smartphone age and also a playful artifact of design in comic-book form.

So gather all your thoughts about good and bad design and join Wang in the Ruby for a lunchtime discussion.
