Layers of Dreamscapes

Layers of Dreamscapes reimagines how we can be immersed in a piece of art by adding a new physical dimension to one of the most popular and oldest subjects of paintings: the landscape. Using her own art, artist and Duke alumna Kelsey Graywill creates 3D models of her 2D landscape paintings. Graywill’s sprawling, dream-like fantasy landscapes act as the reference material. Her process begins with the creation of a heatmap of the landscape topography, and then uses computer software to develop it into a 3D printable model that can be painted to mimic the original 2D painting. The landscape paintings are connected through a large map, which is pieced together like a puzzle using the 3D models. The project aims to engage a new aesthetic experience for a style of art that is otherwise confined by the boundaries of a canvas.
