Too Late to Die Young
(Domingo Sotomayor Castillo, 2018, 110 min, Chile, Spanish with English subtitles, Color, DCP)
In the first summer following Chile’s transition to democracy in 1990, a small group of families live in an isolated community right below the Andes, building a communal enclave of artists and bohemians. 16-year-old Sofía is among them, and her teenage struggles with parents, first loves, and coming-of-age fears are punctured by the troubling realities of the adult world – and the elemental forces of nature. Shot in dreamily diaphanous, sun-splashed images and set to period-perfect pop, this second feature from one of Latin American cinema’s most artful and distinctive voices is at once nostalgic and piercing, a portrait of a young woman—and a country—on the cusp of exhilarating and terrifying change.
