The Stunt Man
(Richard Rush, 1980, 131 min, USA, English, Color, DCP)
A fugitive stumbles onto a movie set just when they need a new stunt man, takes the job as a way to hide out and falls for the leading lady while facing off with his manipulative director. Careening wildly between comedy, drama, Hollywood satire, action-adventure, and paranoid suspense thriller, The Stunt Man was hailed by Pauline Kael as “a virtuoso piece of kinetic moviemaking” and nominated for three Oscars, including Best Director and Best Actor (for the marvelous O’Toole, who gives one of his best performances). A beloved cult item and perennial hidden gem, The Stunt Man remains brashly entertaining and utterly singular.
