Painter and muralist Nina Chanel Abney has been in residence at the Ruby and at UNC-Chapel Hill this spring, and this party is the unveiling of the mural she created with students in UNC’s ARTS 290 class. The mural draws attention to the powerful intersection of the arts and athletics. Over the course of spring semester, Nina has been talking with UNC students to hear about what matters to them: their concerns, ideas, and interests. Together they culled popular culture websites and Wilson Library’s digital archives for images and stories of UNC life, past and present. All of these efforts directly informed Nina’s digital rendering of the mural: a bold, abstract remix, specifically devised as a practical space for sport and a riveting work of public art.
