Description

As part of her three-year Duke-based collaboration with American Ballet Theatre (ABT) Studio Company, choreographic artist Stefanie Batten Bland is working within a creative initiative centered around artistic process and performance installation. The work centers around monuments: our complex attachments to them, their color palette on display and in performance, and how, in today’s current political space, monuments of all types are being questioned, examined, and challenged vocally and physically.

During two weekends, Batten Bland has worked with Duke students and Durham/Triangle dancers to develop and to interrogate the definition of monuments literally, musically, figuratively and physically through dance theater methods. The workshops incorporate material Batten Bland created for the ABT Studio Company and serve as a creative incubator for new ABT material. The intensive will culminate in a public showing on Sunday, January 26, 2020.
