Description
Laurent Bayle is the director and a co-founder of the Philharmonie de Paris, which opened its doors in 2015. Mr. Bayle has previously served as Director General for the Cité de la musique, Artistic Director of IRCAM (Institute for Research and Coordination in Acoustics/Music) at the Centre Pompidou, and created the Strasbourg music festival, Musica, for which he now serves as president.
Mr. Bayle’s lecture explores the future potentialities of music, both through the innovation of new modes of its making and the elaboration of new models of community outreach. In particular, he discusses the DEMOS program he launched in 2010 as a means to encourage young people from disadvantaged backgrounds to actively engage with music through the formation of children’s orchestras. Marking the ten-year anniversary of this project’s initiation, Mr. Bayle will reflect on the successes and challenges of this undertaking and its continued expansion throughout the French territory, as well as its relationship to the Philharmonie de Paris, which itself was built in a northeastern neighborhood of Paris with the intent of promoting inclusion and diversity in the arts.
