Description

Born in Georgia to Civil Rights activists, choreographer Alonzo King planted his pathbreaking ballet company, LINES, in San Francisco in the early 1980s. At Duke, he joins professor Thomas DeFrantz (Duke Dance and African and African-American Studies) for a wide-ranging discussion touching on his career, artistic process, and the dynamics of race and representation at play in his work — and in contemporary ballet more broadly.

The event includes a light lunch provided by Pie Pushers and is part of Duke Performances’ Ballet Futures series. King’s conversation marks the beginning of a yearlong exploration—through regular performances and convenings featuring leading ballet choreographers and companies—of the present and future of the form. More information about Ballet Futures is available HERE.

The Alonzo King LINES Ballet residency culminates in a pair of performances, on Friday, November 15 and Saturday, November 16, in Duke’s Reynolds Industries Theater. Tickets and info available HERE.

Arts & Context is co-sponsored by the Forum for Scholars and Publics at Duke University, The Pinhook, North Star, and Pie Pushers.
