Are you interested in the intersections of acting, dance, singing, art, and music?
Come join Craig Quintero, the artistic director of Taiwan’s Riverbed Theatre, for this two-hour workshop that introduces the creative process he uses in staging his unique form of image-based theater. The workshop will include exercises focused on sound, objects, space, and movement as well as elements drawn from Viewpoints and Japanese butoh. This is a great opportunity to explore a different creative process and to meet other local artists—NO ACTING EXPERIENCE NECESSARY!
This workshop is part of a creative project being developed by Professor Torry Bend (Chair of Theater Studies) and Craig Quintero (Humanities Unbounded Fellow) that will culminate in a performance about coal mining in Taiwan and North Carolina (April 18-20, 2020). The performance will explore both the largely unseen labor of the miners as well as the long-term environmental impact of mining and coal ash on local communities. This performance is being developed in response to the recent efforts by Trump to renew the fossil fuel industry despite global warming and the short-term and long-term dangers.
About Craig Quintero
As the Artistic Director of the Taipei-based Riverbed Theatre Company, Craig has written and directed over fifty original image-based performances, including productions at Korea’s Asia Culture Center (Gwangju), Taiwan’s National Experimental Theatre (Taipei), Theatre Mouffetard (Paris), Alte Teuerwache (Mannheim), Fritz (Stuttgart), Theatre Le Funambule (Avignon), Theatre de la Condition des Soies (Avignon), the Esplanade Studio Theatre (Singapore), Telus Theatre (Vancouver), Tiny Alice (Tokyo), KAVC (Kobe), and Robert Wilson’s Watermill Center (New York). He is also a sculptor and installation artist whose work has been shown at the Asian Biennial, Venice Biennale, Kobe Biennale, Taipei Biennale, Taipei Fine Arts Museum, Taipei MOCA, and the Shanghai Museum of Contemporary Art. Craig received his Ph.D. in Performance Studies from Northwestern University and is an Associate Professor in the Department of Theatre and Dance at Grinnell College. www.craigquintero.com
